Groundhog Day has always been my favorite holiday…seriously!  I remember celebrating it growing up and I never stopped.  When people hear about my love for the day, I get a few reactions:

  1. This must be a joke.
  2. This woman is not firing on all cylinders.
  3. Why?

To quickly answer the first two reactions: 1) no, it’s not a joke, and 2) you’d have to ask my therapist!  Don’t ask my family…they think I’m crazy!  In the past, I’ve thrown Groundhog Day parties (see video) with decorations, games (download some here! and here!), treats, custom t-shirts, and of course, the movie streaming on repeat in the background!  And, yes, I am an official member of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club!  Try to find Groundhog Day greeting cards, though…nada.  Come on, Hallmark…do better!

Groundhog Day Movie Why Groundhog Day?

First, let me say, it’s not about the movie, Groundhog Day.  I mean, it’s an okay movie, but it doesn’t embody the spirit of the day.  [Spoiler Alert: Seriously? It’s a 30-year-old movie!]  It’s about a guy who relives the same day over and over again – approximately 12,400 days or around 34 years.  Analysts say that it would take that long to master the skills Phil Conners mastered in the movie, such as playing piano and sculpting.  The movie really has nothing to do with Groundhog Day, other than the location and Phil is there to cover the annual Groundhog Day ceremony.  It could literally be any day of the year!

So, What is the Spirit of Groundhog Day?

I’m glad you asked!  It’s about HOPE!

  • Hope that the sun will come out tomorrow…wait, wrong movie.Hope
  • Hope for a brighter tomorrow, instead of our 2-3 months of gloomy winter days. Shoutout to all my fellow SAD sufferers! (Seasonal Affective Disorder)
    • People with SAD experience mood changes and symptoms similar to depression.
    • The symptoms usually occur during the fall and winter months when there is less sunlight and usually improve with the arrival of spring.
    • The most difficult months for people with SAD in the United States tend to be January and February.
  • Hope that Spring is on the way…hey, in Michigan 6 more weeks of winter still isn’t a bad forecast! Soon, our faces won’t hurt when we walk outside!
  • Hope of feeling better physically as the weather warms. (The older I get, the more the cold affects me! Anyone else?)

More than the Weather

Since Groundhog Day forecasts usually call for either an early Spring (4 weeks) or a longer winter (6 weeks), we generally start seeing the signs of Spring around Easter, depending on when Easter falls on the calendar. This brings me around to the ultimate Hope…the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

“God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.” (John 3:16-18)

As a Christian – a Christ follower – this hope is life-giving!  No matter what this crazy world throws at us, our hope is in a future…

  • Hope of HeavenNever separated from God
  • In Heaven – a paradise that Jesus is preparing just for us
  • Without pain, suffering, anxiety, depression, trauma, sadness, or tears
  • Where we will live forever – learning more about the Creator of the Universe and praising Him for who He is and for all He has done for us

THIS is why Groundhog Day is my favorite holiday!  HOPE!
